Biofuels from microalgae are attractive replacements to petroleum, but economic large-scale microalgal cultivation technologies for biofuels production have not been developed yet. As one way to achieve economic feasibility in biofuels production from microalgae, offshore floating culture systems equipped have been suggested. Among the developed offshore culture systems, the floating membrane photobioreactors (PBRs) feature selectively permeable membranes (SPMs) and is able to grow microalgae by using only seawater. In an outdoor cultivation experiment, microalgal biomass increased by 1.16 g/L after 17 days in the PBRs with SPMs while nearly zero growth was observed in the control PBRs without SPMs. Construction of larger scale floating PBRs and ocean deployment will be conducted as the next work. |
