Due to its unique biological activities, heparin has been applied as akey component in biomaterials for drug delivery and tissue engineering. We’ve been working on the heparin-functionalized bioimaterials in two approaches, as heparin-functionalized nanoparticles and heparin-based hydrogels. First, we prepared the heparin-functionalized nanoparticle system, and the target growth factor-loaded nanoparticle-hydrogel complex was employed as a tissue regeneration matrix. Applications of these systems will be presented in two cases, the BMP loaded nanoparticle-fibrin gel complex for bone regeneration, and the VEGF loaded complex for angiogenesis. Second, heparin-based hydrogels were prepared, and biological as well as physical properties of the hydrogels can be easily controlled. In vitro culture of cells inside the hydrogel and its optimization depending on cell type will be presented.
