제목 Orientation control of liqiud crystals under nanoconfinement and its photonic application
초록 Molecular orientation of liquid crystals (LCs) can be controlled in a porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) film due to nanoconfinement effect. We directly observed the molecular behaviors upon cooling from isotropic to nematic (N) and smectic A (SmA) phases at nano-scale using a grazing incidence X-ray diffrection (GIXD) technique . The molecular orientation could be controlled along the desired directions as a function of surface treatments of the AAO film and pore diameter. We used the nanoconfined LC as a refractive-index-changable medium in a photonic crystal (PC) made by the periodic AAO. The photonic bandgap of the AAO PC can be switched depending on the values of the refractive index of the LC, which can be varied during phase transition.
