Poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG) polymers are well known as anti-fouling materials that are non-toxic, water soluble, chemically stable, and resistant to immune response. To improve anti-fouling effect, dendritic PEGs were synthesized. The introduction of PEG into the dendritic structure, it has different structure, for example smaller hydrodynamic volume and spherical shape, may has additional advantages compared to linear PEG. Dendritic PEGs were synthesized by living anionic ring opening polymerization of ethylene oxide. Dendritic PEGs were synthesized by divergent method and each generation was carried out in THF using diphenylmethyl potassium (DPMK) catalyst. Allyl bromide was introduced to polymeric chain ends and dihydroxylation was carried out for branch point. Focal point and end groups were functionalized for surface modification. After modifying on solid surface using dendritic PEGs, protein adsorption and platelet adhesion were observed. |
