제목 The effects of surfactants on the electro-optical properties of PDLC films
초록 Polymer dispersed liquid crystals(PDLCs) consist of LC droplets that are dispersed in a solid polymer backbone. In the field OFF, the random array of droplet provides large differences in refractive indices of the droplets and the polymer, and scatters the light so that the cell appears opaque. In the on-state field, the droplets align to reduce the difference of refractive index, and the cell appears transparent.
In view of the behavior in the orientation of the liquid crystal molecule at the polymer's surface, it can be clarified that the electro-optical properties are strongly governed by the polymer. Apparently, these phenomena are governed by the reorientation of the director at the polymer surface. Such reorientation behavior is on the basis of the anchoring energy.
This anchoring energy depends on the kinds of the liquid crystal mixture and the UV-curable monomer composition. Such a relation between the molecular structure in the polymer/LC and the anchoring energy suggests the one of the evidence that the intermolecular forces affects the anchoring energy.
In this study, we have studied the electro-optical properties in PDLC prepared by photo-polymerization induced phase separation processes. To improve the orientation of LC droplets, the four different surfactants were added to PDLC films. In order to clarify the anchoring energy in PDLC films by different surfactants, contact angle was measured and dielectric constant, dielectric dissipation were also observed.
