A novel approach for calculating minimum area of heat exchanger networks at targeting stage is described in this paper. The method accounts for both single tube pass and multipass apparatus. Restricted matches can be accounted for, too. The basic step of the approach is solution of linear optimisation model known as the transportation problem.
