Precipitation of Chevreul's salt from CuSO4 solutions with Na2SO3
Chevreul's salt, Cu-2-SO3 center dot CuSO3 center dot 2H(2)O, has been precipitated from CuSO4 solutions by means of Na2SO3; its appropriate precipitation conditions have been determined. The investigated parameters for precipitating the Chevreul's salt are pH - 3, [SO32-]/[Cu2+] ratio - 1.6, reaction temperature - 60 degrees C, stirring speed - 500 rpm and reaction time - 20 min. The precipitate obtained at these conditions contained 49% copper, having the structure of both tetrahedral coordination of Cu(I) and octahedral coordination of Cu(II) in brick red colour.
