Extraction of Nitrofurantoin Using Ionic Liquids
Imidazolium ionic liquids have been studied as the pH composition dependent liquid liquid extraction processes of nitrofurantoin (NIT) in binary mixtures composed of the ionic liquid (IL) 1-hexyloxymethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, [C6H13OCH2MIM][BF4], or 1,3-dihexyloxymethylimidazolium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide, [(C6H13OCH2)(2)IM]-{NTf2) and water at a temperature of 298.15 K and at ambient pressure. The determination of the partition coefficients between the IL and aqueous solution was mace. The ternary system of {IL (1) + NIT (2) + water (3)} was studied to analyze the performance of the IL in the selectivity of extraction of NIT from aqueous medium. It was found that the distribution coefficients of NIT were strongly dependent on the pH of the aqueous phase. The experimental results were discussed in a frame of the molecular interactions and the influence of the type of cation and anion of the IL. The densities of two ILs were determined as a function of temperature on a range of temperature, (298.15 to 348.15) K.
