Sludge humification as sustainable and simple method of sewage sludge treatment
During the treatment of wastewater, sewage sludge is produced, the long-term utilisation of which must be guaranteed according to national regulations and laws. Thus, one central objective are cost-effective and sustainable sludge treatment methods. A relatively new method is the humification or mineralisation of sewage sludge in reed beds. Initial experiences with this method were made in the 60s. In spite of increasing interest, there are neither acknowledged technological rules nor national directives in Germany. According to today's state of knowledge, the treatment of stabilised sewage sludge in reed beds can be realised with all sludge qualities. In this paper mass balance of dry solids and water and the behaviour of heavy metals and AOX will presented. Also the reload of the WTTP will be discussed.
