Elastomers reinforcement by precipitated silicas
in the case of highly dispersible silicas, adsorption-desorption of macromolecular segments from the free silica surface (unstable links) is proposed to be the elementary molecular mechanism that is the origin of the Payne effect. At large and ultimate deformations, it is shown that highly dispersible silicas with coupling agents permit to delay the decohesion at the filler/rubber interface and then improve the reinforcement.
