It is particularly difficult and expensive to produce plastic parts in relatively smaller production runs. Compromises have to be made in product design, not only because of the high costs of the injection moulds, but also because of poor knowledge about the materials. The remedy may be to subcontract part of the development work. The article demonstrates this with a practical example of the development of a barcode scanner with the Pro/Engineer CAD/CAM package.
