Understanding of the laser welding process has been gained to date primarily through experimental investigation. However, this approach encounters limits with regard to optimisation of development cycles and costs. The use of powerful software that simulates the entire joining process on the basis of mathematical-physical models can provide a solution. This article describes how, with the aid of modem computers and commercially available software, the laser welding process can be made more understandable.
