Since the development of the Arab world's first independent water and power project (Al Taweelah A2) two years ago in Abu Dhabi, the number of such projects in the region has increased rapidly, thanks to billions of dollars in investment the emirate has attracted following the successful privatization of its power and water sectors. Shuweihat-which is now producing 1,500 MW of electricity, as well as 100 million gallons of drinking water a day-is Abu Dhabi's latest, and the world's largest, independent power and desalination project.
