Degradation of acetophenone in water by pulsed corona discharges
Degradation of acetophenone in dilute aqueous solution has been studied using pulsed corona discharges in water. Higher conversions of acetophenone were obtained with the addition oxygen or ozone than with the addition of nitrogen and without the addition of any gas. Intermediates of acetophenone degradation, as determined by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopies (GC-MS), were phenethyl alcohol, toluene, and 2-acetylphenol. In addition, the degradation reaction pathways of acetophenone in water are discussed.
