Scientific advances over the past century have improved most people's lives. in both developed and developing worlds. But increasingly we recognize that many of these benefits have not been produced in a sustainable way, particularly as human populations continue to grow, If ere I focus on some of the consequent problems of sustainability. on some of the possible technical advances that might alleviate the problems, and on the social difficulties inherent in acting today on behalf of a seemingly distant future.
