The development and application of a pneumatic piston test apparatus for assessing safety in the handling of initiator devices
In this paper we present details of the design and application of an apparatus that uses a pneumatic piston to apply forces equal to or greater than those encountered in the explosives industry when workers handle small initiator devices. The new apparatus has been used to assess the performance of detonators, caps and igniters when subjected to simulated handling forces. Additionally, attempts have been made to determine the minimum forces required to cause initiation of a range of such devices. The pneumatic piston unit has also been used successfully to investigate the response of initiators to impact forces.
