X-ray examination of the structure of expanded LDPE
Polish LDPE (FABS 23-D022) of negligible crystallinity, 100 wt. pts., was expanded with 2, 3, or 4 wt. pts. of a Lifocolor Farblast's Hydrocerol BIH 70 porophore in a Brabender PLV 151 PlastiCorder equipped with a single-screw extruder (100 rpm; zone temps.: 130degreesC, 140degreesC, 200degreesC, 125degreesC; head temp., 110degreesC). The resulting film was X-rayed in a D-500 Siemens diffractometer. The higher the porophore weight share added, the higher the degree of crystallinity and the lower the density, the relative elongation and the tensile strength of the LDPE. High-angled (e.g., Theta = 41degrees18') reflexes of expanded samples reveal new-order domains appearing at lower interplane distances.
