Utilization of postgalvanic wastes with the aid of polymer and mineral materials - (A laboratory note)
A galvanic waste, 20 mL, containing suspended matter 3.5 chlorides 0.7, sulfates 0.8 g/L, and Cr 3.481, Zn 8.46, Cd 0.017, and Pb 0.302 mg/L, was flocculated with a (0.2:1 g/g) mixture, 9.0 g/L waste, of poly(acrylamide-co-2-actylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid) and a montmorrilonite-based (Italian) 'Valdol' bentonite, set aside for 2 h, decanted, filtered, and diluted with water The metals were removed in 70.0, 98.5, about 100, and 35.5%, resp. A commercial H2O-soluble 'Praestol 2540' polymer proved inferior to the copolymer When used alone, the bentonite and the copolymer solution were resp. ineffective and inferior as compared with the mixture.
