The removal of biodegradation inhibitors from industrial wastewaters at Zdzieszowice Coke Plant
A coagulation-and-adsorption action of aq. (69.8 Fe3+/25.5 Fe(2+)g/L) sulfates (d. 1.55 g/mL, pH 0.8-1.1), 0.625 L/m(3), and coke dust, 0.30+/-0.05 kg/m(3) wastewater, used in a 14-day test to treat 159 m(3)/h of the Zdzieszowice dephenolized (by extraction) and deammoniated (by distillation) wastewaters, removed 16 PAHs (cf. US Environmental Protection Agency list) in 99+%, cyanides 93.8, sulfides 73.9, and oils and tars (bio-inhibitors) in 88.1%. The dump-side dust, porosity 35% (macropores 0.261 mL/g), 7 m(2)/g, contained C 85.0, H 0.51, S 0.76, ash 11.1, H2O 1.3, and volatiles 1.6%. At PH 9.0-9.5, the initial Fe-3[Fe(CN)(6)](2) and FeS hydrolyzed to yield Fe(OH)(2) and Fe(OH)(3) which coagulated to yield the contaminant-sorbing suspension to be sedimented off. The residual sludge, oils and tars were removed by flotation. The resulting wastewaters were homogenized, combined with other in(ex)ternal (e.g., sanitary) wastewaters, and bio-treated (nitrification, biodegradation and denitrification).
