The cobalt-catalyzed combustion of hydrogen. Opportunities and hazards of the hydrogen power engineering
Active gamma-Al2O3 was impregnated at 20degreesC with aq. Co(NO3)(2) (i) 1 h; (ii) 20 h, dried 5 h/110degreesC, calcined in air 4 h/400degreesC or 4 h/700degreesC, and granulated, 2-3 mm. Catalyst (i) was also coimpregnated with aq. 5% H2PtCl6. The sp. surface was 65-70 m(2)/g, av. pore size 10.5-11.5 nm, av. crystallite size 15-17.3 nm The 20 h, 400degreesC catalyst had 8% Co and 71 m(2)/g, the 700degreesC had 65 m(2)/g and pore size 11.7 nm. Mesopores dominated. H-2, 0.1 MPa, was burnt with air at catalyst loads of 2600 s(-1) over 100-500degreesC. With the 400degreesC catalyst, the degree of conversion was 86% at 500degreesC vs. the 88% with the Co-Pt/Al2O3 and 60% with the 700degreesC catalyst. The 700degreesC were less active than the 400degreesC catalysts.
