Selective hydrogenation of model alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones
Four alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones were catalytically hydrogenated over platinum catalysts supported on alumina, silica or magnesium oxide and modified with zirconia or titania. The process was carried out under atmospheric pressure at 423-523 K and hydrogen-ketone mole ratio 2:1 and catalyst load 2 g/(g(.)h). Modification of the platinum catalysts with titania resulted in an increase in yield of saturated alcohols. Cyclohexen-2-one was converted to cyclohexanol in 56% yield at 423 K, isophorone to isophorol in 81.2% yield at 498 K and beta-ionone to dihydro-beta-ionol in 70.2% yield at 423 K.
