The effect of catalyst type on the synthesis of 2-ethylhexyl glycidyl ether
Lewis-type compds. like SnCl4, BF3 (complex with PhOH), and anhyd. AlCl3 (complex with 2-butoxyethanol in toluene) were studied as catalysts in the reaction of epichlorohydrin (I) with 2-ethylhexanol (II). Anhyd. SnCl4, 0.2-0.84%, was the most effective at 70-75degreesC, 35 min, and I:II mote ratio of (0.95-1.05):1, to yield 81% of chlorohydrin ether of 2-ethylhexanol, with I reacting to completion. Chlorohydrin polyether by-products were 7-8%. Dehydrochlorination of the chlorohydrin ether with NaOH in the presence of tetraethylammonium bromide gave the title ether in 98% yield with the chlorohydrin polyethers converted into glicydyl polyethers. The distillate had epoxy no. 0.470-0.495 mol/100 g, viscosity 2-6 mPa.s at 25degreesC, total Cl 5-6%, and hydrolyzable Cl 0.1-0.18%.
