Adsorption of heavy metals on activated carbon in the presence of selected organic compounds
Aq. 0.1 and 1-Mg/cm(3) Pb or Cd soins. were sorbed on a Gryfskand (Hajnowka, PL) WD-extra granular nonmodifted activated carbon pretreated with dild. HCl, in the presence of acetone, chloroacetone, MeOH, methyl lsopropyl ketone, MEK, Et acetate, dichloromethane or 1,1-dichloroethane. The org./metal mass ratio was varied from 0 to 10. The sorption capacity fell nonlinearly In relation to the concn. of each org. compd. The Pb/Cd sorption capacity ratio was always about 3/1. At 1 mg/cm(3), the well-sol., high-polar, large-molecule compds. (MEK, MeiPrK, Et acetate) gave lowest depressions, ca. 15% for each metal; the poorly sol. and weakly or non-polar compds. (MeOH, acetone, chloroacetone) reduced the Pb and Cd sorptions by ca. 15 and 30-4001.; the chloro-derivs., esp. dichloromethane, reduced the Pb and Cd sorptions by about 25 and 50%, resp. At 0.1 mg/cm(3) the sorption of the metals was more uniformly affected by the org. compds.
