Adsorption of lead and cadmium from aqueous solutions on activated carbon
Pb2+ and/or Cd2+ ions were sorbed from aq. 0.5, 2.5 or 5 mM Pb or Cd and from 1, 5 or 10 mM (1:1) Pb-Cd solns. on a Gryfskand (Hajnowka, PL) WD-extra de-ashed, dild. HCl-pretreated carbon, bulk d. 404 g/l., by a static (5 g C/0.1 l soln.) or a dynamic method (7 cm high 5-g bed, liq. holdup 10 cm(3), flow rate 125 im/s). The Pb/Cd sorption capacity ratio was always similar to 3/1 and generally higher under dynamic than under static conditions in both single- and two-ion adsorptions. Unlike Pb, sorption of Cd was rapid until the effluent/influent concn. ratio attained 0.8, and then very slow until full satn. of the C sorbent. Breakthrough times were short and showed the C sorbent to be inadvisable for removing heavy metals from solns., and esp. from potable water.
