Oxidation of tetrachloromethane (TCM) run over/in the presence of monolithic catalysts
TCM, 500 mg/m(3), in 215 I. air/hr. and 32.5 g water vaporl hr., was oxidized in an elec.-heated tubular reactor over (a) 0.09Pt-0.04%Rh or (b) 0. 024Pt-0.015%Rh catalyst, each deposited on a gamma-Al2O3 washcoat supported on (a) honeycomb cordierite, (b) kanthal foil. Oxidn. was complete at (a) 500 degrees C, contact time 0.36 s, and (b) 550 degrees C. Catalyst a was favorable to b in metal content and monolith cell size (1.0-mm squares). Products included CO, traces of Cl, and HCl (in the condensate), but neither formaldehyde nor CO. The catalysts retained full activity in (a) 1-year and (b) 200-hr. tests.
