Extraction of zinc(II) with selected phosphonium ionic liquids
Trihexyltetradecylphosphonium chloride (CYPHOS IL101) and bis[(trifluoromethyi)sulfonyl]amide (IL 109), each a 50 vol% soln. in toluene or tributyl phosphate (TBP), and 50 vol%. TBP in a low-aromatic kerosene b. 222-234 degrees C (Exxsol D 2201230), were used to ext. Zn from 0.1-80 g/l. Zn(II) solns. contg. 5 M Cl- and 0 or 1.8% HCl at room temp. The feed resembled a spent pickling liquor. The IL109/TBP (at 1.8% HCl, distribution coeff. 4.33; synergy coeff., 0.53) and IL101/ toluene extd. 80% and nearly 100% of Zn, resp. The latter loaded phase could be stripped of the metal with 0.5 M NH4OH in 20-80% yield. The 100% IL101 was too viscous to be useful.
