Coal tar pitch wetting angle and surface tension data as a technological pitch applicability guide
Softening ps. (SP = 54-116 degrees C) and toluene (TI)- and quinoline(QI)-insols. were detd. for continuous tar distn. pitches, com. electrode-grade baked C, and surfactant-modified or heated (300 degrees C) or air-oxidized (300 degrees C) pitch, acicular pitch coke, and anthracite calcined at 1300 degrees C. Contact angle on pitch-wetted expanded or spec-grade graphite or lustrous C and sessile-drop or max. bubble pressure (SP < 65 degrees C) surface tension were detd. in relation to temp. to see the effect of SP, TI and resin content (= TI - QI). Incipient wettability = 0.98 (SP)-S-. + 17.9 (r(2) = 0.98) showed each pitch to wet the expanded C at SP + similar to 18 degrees C. The higher the (TI - QI), the greater the slope of the wetting angle vs. temp. curve. Porometry showed baked C materials to be pitch-impregnated to have a fairly uniform macroporous structure.
