Electrochemical studies on hydrogen absorption in palladium and its alloys with other noble metals
Pd and its binary and ternary alloys with other noble metals (Pt, Rh, Au) were deposited on a gold substrate by electroplating from aq. solns. to produce limited vol. thin-layer electrodes and electrochem. tested by cyclic chronovoltamperometry and chronoamperometry in respect to the reversible H electrode. The electrochemical H absorption in the electrodes depended on the composition of electrode material and on the electrode potential. The addn. of alloying metals resulted in a decrease in the absorption capacity of Pd except for Rh where an increase in the absorption capacity was observed. A hysteresis was observed in chronoamperometric absorption/desorption expts. The hysteresis was higher for pure Pd than for its alloys. The alpha-beta phase transition rate in the electrode material influenced the kinetics of H absorption/desorption.
