A review, with 39 refs., of methods for prodn., properties of PhO(CH(2))(2)OH. Its uses as a biocide in cosmetic and household chem. and as a solvent for resins, synthetic polymers, dyes, mineral oils and fats were presented. The results of author's own research on light duty washing agents and waterless solvents for removing graffiti paintings were also included.
