Impact of municipal waste treatment plants on the microbiological pollution of air
Microbiol. pollution of air was monitored in the area and in vicinity of 3 Polish municipal waste disposal plants in the summer time 2008. The concns. of bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes, P. fluorescens, staphylococci, Escherichia coli, and the bacilli of Salmonella sp. and Enterococcus sp. were detd. in air samples collected by compaction method. At the same time, the content of the biogas components (MeH, CO(2) and O(2)) from the selected landfill was detd. A heavy emission of bacteria and actinomycetes at the points located at the operating landfill and at the compost plant was obsd. A heavy air pollution with mannitol-positive staphylococci and moderate air pollution by P fluorescens and mannitol-negative staphylococci was found. Contents of MeH, CO(2) and O(2) in the air were also detd.
