Effect of solvents exposure on barrier properties of cured butyl rubber
Non-polar butyl rubber containing nano filler (layered aluminosilicate, 10 or 20 phr) or corn. C black was studied for barrier properties in contact with non-polar cyclohexane and polar BuAc to det. the resistance of the material to permeation, assessed as the breakthrough time. Short breakthrough times (25-53 mm) found for cyclohexane under repeated multiple contact conditions independently on the presence and type of fillers were, however, by 75-150% longer than in the case of continuous contact conditions (15-33 min). The breakthrough time determined for BuAc was by 50-400% longer untder continuous contact conditions (130-200 min) than under repeated multiple contact conditions (40-120 min). The addn. of C black resulted in an increase in the breakthrough time for both solvents by 50% only under continuous contact conditions. The addn. of nano filler resulted in an increase in the breakthrough time only in the case of BuAc permeation under continuous contact conditions.
