Study on synthesis of dichloropropanols by pressure hydrochlorination of glycerol in presence of adipic acid
Glycerol was hydrochlorinated to dichloropropanols (I) with gaseous HCl under pressure of 0.5-1.0 MPa in the presence of adipic acid (5.66%) or organic adipates as catalysts. At 150 degrees C, 0.8 MPa and during 90 min, the formation of I (mainly (CH(2)CI)(2)CHOH) proceeded a few times faster than under atmospheric pressure (yield 85%). The recycle and re-use of up to 90% of the adipate catalyst after recovery of I, did not result in any substantial decrease of the reaction yield.
