New self-stratifying organic coating compositions with improved durability and excellent adhesion to metallic substrate
Five corn. acrylic resins were mixed in varying proportions to binary mixts., diluted with a mixed solvent, optionally pigmented with Al flake paste, formed as coatings on glass and steel substrates and studied for surface tension, solubility parameter, stratification degree (phase sepn.), microstructure of crossections, hardness, adhesion to the substrates, as well as bending and impact strengths. Some pairs of acrylic resins were capable of phase sepn. and migration of sepd. phases to the air/coating or coating/substrate interfaces. The pigmentation of the upper layer with Al flakes resulted in formation of the coating systems with decorative properties and excellent adhesion to steel.
