Development of a Regenerative Hydrogen-Vanadium Fuel Cell for Energy Storage Applications
A novel regenerative cell based on aqueous vanadium electrolyte V(V)/V(IV) and hydrogen was designed, assembled and tested. This cell offers several potential advantages for grid scale storage applications through its use of a gaseous anolyte coupled with a liquid catholyte. Charge and discharge experiments at different conditions showed encouraging reversibility and performance from the first tests of the concept presented here. The maximum power density achieved was 114 mW/cm(2) from a cell of area 25 cm(2), with supporting analysis of voltage losses by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showing good prospects for further improvement through optimisation of cell materials and design.
