Synthesis and characterization of gallates for linear low-density polyethylene as antioxidant
In this paper, the synthesis of octyl gallate (OG), dodecyl gallate (DG) and hexadecyl gallate (HG) as antioxidant for linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) was reported for the first time. The structure and antioxidation of synthetic gallates were characterized by FTIR H-1 NMR and oxidation induction time. The LLDPE-OG, LLDPE-HG and LLDPE-HG of degradation and stabilization were compared with the commercial phenolic antioxidant Irganox 1010. Experimental results indicate that the antioxidant ability of the three synthetic antioxidants is in the following order: DG > HG > OG. Therefore, DG could be used as an efficient and low environmental impact additive of LLDPE. The release of the gallates from LLDPE films was evaluated by monitoring the oxidation induction temperature change upon water extraction, demonstrating that LLDPE-DG retained high stability against migration.
