Celluloses microfibres (CMF) reinforced poly (ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA) composites: Dynamic mechanical, gamma and thermal ageing studies
CMF/EVA composites were prepared with different CMF loadings by melt extrusion. Mechanical properties of the composites such as tensile strength, elongation at break and tear strength were analysed. Composite showed enhanced mechanical properties compared to gum EVA. Dynamic mechanical analysis of composites (DMA) showed increased storage modulus and decreased stiffness and damping properties with CMF loading. Composites were exposed to gamma radiations at different radiation dosage of 5, 10 and 15 Mrad. Tensile strength of composites decreased after gamma exposure. However the retention in tensile strength has been found to be increasing with CMF loading. The free radical formation and the degradation of polymer matrix during gamma exposure are further explained using FTIR spectrum. The effect of thermal ageing on polymer composites was studied by investigating their weight loss at different interval of time. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
