Failure behavior of nano-SiO2 fillers epoxy coating under hydrostatic pressure
The failure of organic coating (epoxy resin filled with 5 mass% nano-SiO2 particles) on mild steel under high hydrostatic pressure (35 atm) has been studied compared with that under atmospheric pressure (1 atm), using impedance measurements, gravimetric testing, adhesion testing and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that high hydrostatic pressure accelerated the failure of the organic coating by promoting diffusion of water in the coating, which speeds up water spread and electrochemical reactions at the interface. The roughness of the coating and steel has been discussed from point of view of their respective fractal dimensions Pic and Dfx, as deduced from impedance measurements (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd.
