A method for obtaining the Coulomb energy of a lattice of charges is presented. The method is used here to find the Madelung constant of a number of crystals. The method is simpler than the Ewald summation method. It is based on the use of a basis set of lattices. Any lattice may be represented by a linear combination of these basis lattices.
