Poly(ethylene terephthalate)
Preparation and Phase Separation of Water-Born Polyurethane Based on Poly (ethylene terephthalate)

Water-born polyurethane (PU) based on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) was synthesized using the polyols prepared by condensation polymerization of glycolysis product of PET and adipic acid. In order to prepare water-born PU, PU prepolymers were synthesized from the polyols, dimethylol propionic acid, and toluene diisocyanate, and a ketazine was employed as a latent hard and chain extended by a latent hardener, ketazine prepared from hydrazinc and methylethly ketone. Average particle size of the water-born PU latex was ca. 0.2㎛. Phase separation of the PU after drying was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. It was found that the rate of initial phase separation of soft segment and hard segment in the PU (Ri) increased with the PET content in the PU. The Ri of the PU based on glcolysis product of PET and ethylene glycol was faster than that of the PU based on glycolsis product of PET and diethylene glycol. The Ri at 60℃ was faster than that at 90℃ whereas the phase separation rate of the PU in the late stage (Ri> at 90℃ was faster than that at 60℃. It is speculated that Ri is mainly affected by the miscibility of the soft segment with hard segment of the PU, whereas Ri is affected by the diffusion propetry of the soft segment of the PU.
