Synthesis of Poly(enaryloxynitriles) Containing Arylate and Aramide Units in the Main Chain and Their Thermal Properties

New poly(enaryloxynitriles) with arylate or aramide units in the main chain were prepared by interfacial polymerizaion of p-bis(1-chloro-2,2-dicyanovinyl)benzene (2) with disodium salts of the corresponding aromatic diols. These polymers possess inherent viscosities of 0.12-0.35 dL/g and Mw in the range of 9000-11000. They are easily soluble in polar aprotic solvents such as DMF, DMSO and NMP as well as in THF. Brittle and clear films were cast from DMF solutions. These polymers show a large exotherm in differential scanning calorimetry and undergo a curing reaction between 320℃ and 370℃ to form insoluble materials. Thermogravimetry displayed a good thermal stability of 78-86% residual weight at 500℃.
