Synthesis and Cationic Polymerization of p-(2-Vinyloxyethoxy)-N-(4-nitrostilbenzylidene)aniline for Nonlinear Optical Applications1
p-(2-Vinyloxyethoxy)-N-(4-nitrostilbenzylidene)aniline 5 was prepared by a reaction between 2-iodoethyl vinyl ether and p-hydroxy-N-(4-nitrostilbenzylidene)aniline 4. Monomer 5 was polymerized with a cationic initiator to obtain a polymer with p-oxy-N-(4-nitrostilbenzylidene)aniline, which is presumably an effective chromophore for second-order nonlinear optical applications in the side chains. The resulting polymer 6 was soluble in DMSO and DMF. The inhernt viscosities of polymers were in the range of 0.20-0.30 dL/g in DMSO. Solution-cast films were cloudy and brittle, which could be due to the rather low molecular weight and the presence of high dipole density of the side chain.
