Supramolecular Self-assembly of Liquide-crystalline Polymers through the Formation of Double Hydrogen Bonds between 2,6-Bis(amino)pyridine and Carboxylic Acid Moieties
Supramolecular liquid-crystalline polymers have been prepared by the formation of double hydrogen bonds between 2-(amino)pyridine and carboxylic acid moieties. Side-chain mesogenic polymers as well as low molecular weight complexes have been obtained by complexation of benzoic acid and 2,6-bis(acylamino)pyridine molecular units. Significant mesophase stabilizaion is observed for a complex built from a polyamide containing 2,6-bis(acylamino)pyridine moiety in its backbone and a 4-(phenyl)benzoic aicd. The hydrogen bonding component, 2,6-bis(acylamino)pyridine is a versatile molecular unit for building mesomorphic supermolecules.
