Investigation of Adhesion between Polypropylene/EPDM Panels and Urethane Based Paints
Polypropylene (PP)/EPDM panels were coated with hydrogenated polybutadiene (atactic poly(1-butene)), containing carboxylic acid functional groups, or treated by gas plasma of O2, N2, Ar or NH3 in order to enhance the adhesion to paint. The PP/EPDM panels were characterized by using XPS, SEM and contact angle measurement before and after the treatments. Modified blister tests such as constrained blister and peninsula blister tests were adopted for the paint adhesion study, owing to the poor reliability of the cross cut tape test (ASTM D-3359). The peninsula blister test was the only method which could discriminate between the goodness of the surface modifications. The enhanced paint adhesion by gas plasma treatment and tie-coat polymers was attributed to acid-base interaction (s) between modified PP/EPDM surface (acidic) and urethane based paint (basic).
