Characterization of Bacterial Copolyesters with Unsaturated Pendant Groups - Effect of Eposidation on Thermal Degradation -
The thermal decomposition behavior of poly(3-hydroxyoctanoate-co-3-hydroxyundec-10-enoate)s (PHOUs) and their partially epoxidized products (PHOUEs) have been studied by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The thermograms of epoxidized PHOUSs showed three-step egradation, while that of PHOU exhibits one-step degradation. The higher thermal stability of PHOUEs might be due to the crosslinking reactions caused by pendant epoxide groups in the copolymer during the degradation process. Crosslinking reactions were confirmed by the expthermic peak on DSC thermogram. From the isothermal study at 250 ℃, the residual weight appears to be directly correlated with the amount of epoxide groups introduced into PHOUs.
