Characterization of Bacterial Copolyesters with Unsaturated Pendant Groups -Production and Thermal Properties-
Poly(3-hydroxyoctanoate-co-3-hydroxyundec-10-enoate)s, PHOUs, with various amounts of unsaturated side chains were produced by Pseudomonas oleovrans from mixtures of 10-undecenoic acid and sodium octanoate. The amount of unsaturated unit in copolymers was established by ¹HNMR analysis and the results indicate that the amount of olefin in the carbon source directly correlates with the amount of unsaturated unit in the copolymer, PHOUs. For the PHOU samples with unsaturated pendant unit, thermal properties such as the glass transition temperature(Tg), melting temperature (Tm)and heat of fusion (ΔHm) tend to decrease as the amount of unsaturated unit in the copolymer increases. The onset and maximum decomposition temperatures as measured by thermogravimetric analysis did not change significantly for the PHOUs with various unsaturation.
