Blends of Biodegradable Aliphatic Polyester and Starch-grafted-Poly(methyl methacrylate) Copolymer

Grafting polymer chains having different repeating units on starch usually causes substantial changes to the physico-chemical properties of starch. In this study, starch was reacted with methyl methacrylate (MMA) using ceric ammonium nitrate as an initiator. The optimum reaction conditions for the maximum graft yield were established. To develop a new biodegradable polymer, this grafted copolymer (S-g-PMMA) was blended with biodegradable aliphatic polyester named as copolyesterethylene (CPEE). The compatibility of the two materials was investigated by measuring mechanical properties and observing the blends with a scanning electron microscopy. Throughout all compositions, CPEE/S-g-PMMA samples showed higher tensile strength and impact strength than CPEE/starch samples. Scanning electron microscopic images showed that the granules of starch in the CPEE/starch blends were relatively loosely packed compared to those in the CPEE/S-g-PMMA blends.
