Dielectric Property-Phase Behavior Relationship of a Polymer/LC Blend

Binary blends of poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) and low molecular weight liquid crystal (LC), 4-cyano-4''-n-heptylbiphenyl (7CB) were prepared to study the relationship between the dielectric properties of the blends and their phase behavior. The dielectric properties of the blends with given LC concentrations were measured as a function of temperature at several different frequencies using inductance-resistance-capacitance (LCR) meter. Results exhibited that remarkable changes of the dielectric properties occurred at characteristic temperatures of the samples due to the phase transitions of LC domains in the blends, which were varified when compared with the phase diagram of PMMA/7CB blend.
