Electrochemical Properties of Polyethylene Membrane Modified with Sulfonic Acid Group
Ion-exchange membranes having the sulfonic acid groups for battery separators were prepared by radiation-induced grafting of styrene onto polyethylene (PE) films and by the subsequent sulfonation of polystyrene graft chains. The surface area, thickness, and volume of grafted film increased with increasing grafting yield. The water uptake and KOH diffusion flux of the ion-exchange membrane also increased by increasing the sulfonic acid content. Electrical resistance of ion-exchange membrane having the sulfonic acid group decreased with increasing sulfonic acid content. The transport number (t+) of K+ in the sulfonated membrane was in the range of 0.81-0.92.
