Current status in high-strain-rate superplasticity in Japan
The project entitled "Towards Innovation in Superplasticity" aims to give a precise description and an analysis of superplastic behaviors through theoretical and experimental studies. In addition to phenomenological investigations of superplasticity occurring in new materials such as nano-structured materials, non-equilibrium materials, fine ceramics and their composites, a unified understanding of superplasticity is provided by non-traditional frontiers of nano- (including an atomistic level) and mesoscopic mechanics. It is proposed to establish a new field of grain boundary plasticity in materials science, which will be a cousin of the well-established field of crystal plasticity. Some main results of the project, especially focusing to high-strain-rate superplasticity, are reviewed in the present paper.
