The effect of the melt/mould interface upon the As-cast surface solidification microstructure of Al4.5wt%Cu
A method for producing a high-quality as-cast surface at a low liquid metal head is presented. By controlling mould filling method and chill surface topography a range of surface microstructures are observed. The results are rationalized on the basis of the early melt/mould interactions.
